When I logged into Blogger this evening, I remembered yet again that I DO enjoy blogging. I seem to go in spurts that never seem to last though. Anyways... Why haven't I been blogging? Guess I had "better" things to do. Since just after Thanksgiving we have been really busy with the business almost every evening. That will hopefully end soon, but I'm not going to talk about that here.
For especially the past 5 years, Isaac has suffered from terrible sinus conditions and being almost constantly fatigued among other things. One day, his I read an article his mom sent him by Dr. Oz. (Read
here) It was said if you had any of the symptoms listed below that you should be treated with antifungals for a yeast problem otherwise know as Candida.
CFS or fibromyalgia,
Chronic nasal congestion or sinusitis
Spastic colon (gas, bloating, diarrhea and/or constipation)
Been on recurrent or long term antibiotics
Intermittent painful sores in the mouth (not cold sores on the outer lips) that last for about 10 days at a time.
These are just some of the symptoms that can be associated with a candida problem. When I researched Candida further, I found he actually had quite a few of the known symptoms that are often related to Candida. When taking Dr. William G. Crook's
candida questionnaire he scored off the charts for having this problem.
There is a lot to be read and a lot of info to be sifted through on the Internet. A lot of people who want to sell you a miracle cure. Of course ONLY their plan works...
Problem: Candida (yeast overgrowth in the body)
How to cure: Stop eating products with yeast. Right?
Wrong! Stop feeding the yeast until it "dies off".
So what
does yeast like? Sugar... Any form of it. That means not only means no "sweets", but no carbohydrates (they break down into sugars in your body), and no fruit either. So basically no potatoes, pasta, rice, bread, cereal, and no dairy. Dairy = Lactose anything that ends in "ose" = sugar. ie sucrose, fructose.
So as of Dec. 2nd, 2010 all that stuff was out the door. For the first couple of days he felt terrible! Never thought about the body actually being addicted to sweets/carbs, but it sure enough is. The withdrawal is like quitting any other addicting stuff. The good news is... it only lasted a couple of days and by day number four and five, his sinuses were all cleared up.
Isaac used to start almost every day off with some sort of sinus medication and would come home and flop on the floor completely exhausted. Today, his sinus problems are gone, he has only taken sinus medication maybe 2 times since the day he started the diet, and he feels much better physically.
The only change he has been doing is his diet and taking probiotics etc. We have slowly been reintroducing some foods to the diet. Some he has had a bad reaction to, and others he now eats fairly regularly. I have learned a lot about "healthy" eating and new foods in the past 2 months. Oooh, I just realised tomorrow would be his 2 month mile marker! : D Yay!
I won't say it has all been easy. It has been quite challanging at times. The holidays with no sugar, wheat, pork, dairy etc!? We pulled off Christmas dinner pretty well though and stuck with it.
Eating healthier is actually pretty good most of the time, but
most unfortunately not very cost effective... : ( meat, fresh veggies and fruits, and hard to find alternative grains are
not as cheap as bread, pasta, and rice. All big no, no's. I love to cook, and to try new recipes so if you have one that doesn't have well uh... any of the "
bad" things mentioned earlier in the post, let me know. I'll share a few recipes on here every now an again as well. We've found a few keepers. : ) Til next time...
